ENGINEERING BRANCHES, BRANCH SCOPE & PLACEMENTS
Computer Science engineering: Computers is comparatively new & emerging branch & require you to learn computing science & to some extent electronic concepts. Computer engineers are required in design of micro processors, software writing, circut design etc. for which one needs to be strong in mathematical concepts & have aptitude for c++ programming. And if you are average in mathematics, you cannot go too far in the field. Since the developed countries are outsourcing computing work to India, there is great placement scope & demand for CS professionals & packages offered are sky high.
But do not follow others & assess your skills as the field requires skills & real hard work.

Electronics & Communication engineering: previously it was electronics only but after addition of the communication, the popularity of the branch has gone highly upwards. The course material has lot of similarities with computer & electrical. Even the most of tech. recruiters do not differentiate between these branches for placements. The course content is to hone the skill for design & development of complex circuits & hardware. The main employers are from the pvt sector.

Information technology: The branch very much similar to cs & slightly lesser math skills can also work. It is related with effective use of already available software/hardware. It is also concerned with available system putting being put to gainful commercial use. It is mainly involved in management of information using computers. The companies recruit you as data base adminstator, webmaster, programmer & computer security analyst. It companies are mass recruiters with good pay packets.
Mechanical engineering: It is the oldest & most comprehensive branch of engineering. It is the application of physics & mathematical science for improvement of common man’s life. The subjects of study are kinematics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat engines, material science, etc. Drawing, cad/cam is also an important subject. Mechanical engineers are required in almost every sphere of life. The course topics being related to daily life, become interesting for study & implemention. Demand & placements for the branch are going to increase manifolds in the coming years.

Civil engineering: This is also one of the oldest & core branches of engineering. & has ample scope of employment in PVT. & Govt. sectors. In fact, in pre-liberalization years, it was highest ranked branch for employment in public/govt sector. And now with infrastructure requirement of the country & increase in govt. spending in infra, next boom is around to reach. Although the salary packages are slighly on lower side but the work pressure is lesser compared to the other fields & life is slightly comfortable for the civil engineers.
The main subjects of study relate to strength of materials, hydraulics, land surveying, design etc.

Industrial engineering: The branch is combination of engineering & management. It involves operations, manufacturing/production & management. The curriculum includes process & system engineering and financing & engineering management. The degree makes you eligible for techno-managerial spot.The scope of placement is as good as for mechanical branch.

Textile engineering: It involves process of conversion of raw material to finished clothes. The textile engineer has to manage various processes from ginning to spinning to finish. Since course is available at few selected colleges, the competition is less & placement opportunities as well as salarey packages are good.

Automobile engineering: It teaches you the combination of mech., elect., & electronics skills but more or less it can be treated as subset of mechanical branch with emphasis on auto line.
Now a days auto sector is booming in India with all international car manufacturers opening shop & sectoral growth at around 25%, the job opportunities are immense.

Electrical engineering: A core branch deals with production, transmission, and distribution of elec. Power. The electrical engineers work on design, development & testing of power stations, telecom systems & common use applications. It is one of the core branches of engineering & has vast scope of employment in Pvt. & Govt. sectors. But it is amazing to see the students discarding the branch.

Agricultural engineering: It is all about application of science & tech. to agri production & processing. It is really vast field combining various science and engineering fields & deals in production & processing agri commodities. Since India is moving to the next era in agri field, the scope for production, processing & management is great but at the same time as it is a specialized sector stream, you remain confined to a particular industry. So one need to check his priorities.
Metallurgical engineering: It deals with spheres of material science consisting metallic elements, mixtures & compounds. Although the branch of study is available in most of the top Indian institutes, the preference for the branch is very low where as it is highly ranked branch abroad. Metallurgical thermodynamics, material science elements, metal casting are the subjects of study. Scope for placements is also on lower side in India.
